Tougaloo, SUNO, Oakwood earn Week 12 HBCUAC Men's Basketball Honors
NEW ORLEANS - Tougaloo College forward Antonio Patterson wins Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) Offensive Player of the Week. Southern University at New Orleans forward Jermaine Lawrence claims Defensive Player of the Week. Jaylon Hicks takes home Freshman of the Week. Oakwood University forward Joshua Barnett garners Newcomer of the Week. The men were honored for their performance during January 12-18, the conference announced on Monday.
Patterson averaged 21 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game in two contests, leading the Bulldogs to two victories and the HBCUAC West Division lead. He had a high of 28 points and nine rebounds against Wiley University on Saturday. He shot 50 percent from the field, 57.1 percent from 3-point territory and 86 percent from the charity stripe. Patterson had six offensive rebounds and seven assists. This is Patterson's second weekly honor.
Lawrence had a career week grabbing 13 rebounds and blocking eight shots. He put up a career-high six blocks, with two in overtime in a win over Paul Quinn College on Saturday. Lawrence also had six steals.
Hicks recorded 12.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game, helping the Knights to two victories. He moved up to third in the conference with 34 steals overall and 11th in points per game during HBCUAC play. His dunk in overtime energized SUNO to finish off Paul Quinn. This is Hicks' eighth weekly honor.
Barnett posted 19 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, helping Oakwood compete against Talladega College on Thursday and defeat Voorhees University on Saturday. He hit 10 shots with four from 3-point territory. Barnett added five assists and four steals.

About the HBCU Athletic Conference
The HBCU Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) is the only HBCU conference in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The HBCUAC membership includes Dillard University (LA), Fisk University (TN), Huston-Tillotson University (TX), Oakwood University (AL), Paul Quinn College (TX), Philander Smith University (AR), Rust College (MS), Southern University at New Orleans (LA), Stillman College (AL), Talladega College (AL), Tougaloo College (MS), University of the Virgin Islands (St. Thomas), Voorhees University (SC), Wilberforce University (OH), and Wiley University (TX). HBCUAC sponsors championships in men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's track and field, women's volleyball, softball, and baseball. In 2022, the HBCUAC secured the largest media rights deal in conference and NAIA history, signing a multimillion-dollar deal with Urban Edge Network. On July 1, 2024, the conference rebranded from the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) to the HBCU Athletic Conference, marking a new era for the conference that embodies the makeup of its membership.
