Wiley University announces the hiring of Spearman as Head Athletic Trainer
Wiley University Director of Athletics Rafael Gonzalez is pleased to announce the hiring of Jenny Spearman as head athletic trainer, effective August 1.
Spearman brings 10 years of professional experience to Wiley, having held the same position at Tatum High School for the last six years. Before that, she was the athletic trainer at Texas and Kilgore Colleges. Spearman already has connections to Wiley.
"Four of my athletes attend Wiley," Spearman said. "Assistant women's basketball coach Nigel Mayfield played at Texas College when I was there. I've trained the head baseball coach's daughter, Kerrigan Biggs. I live in Marshall and am very familiar with the area."
Spearman will collaborate with Matthew Walters, who begins in June. Sharing the workload was appealing not only to Spearman but also to Gonzalez.
"We have nearly 250 athletes," Gonzalez said. "That's an overwhelming load for one person to handle. Our previous trainers had to work long hours. By bringing in Matthew and Jenny, I believe this will create a working environment where they will feel comfortable and thrive while ensuring our athletes receive the treatment they need and perform at a high level."
Wiley will sponsor 13 varsity sports in 2025-26. Spearman's journey into athletic training began in high school when she served as a student trainer.
"I was a trainer for cross country and then would play basketball and run track. I liked it then and continued in college and it took off from there."
Spearman earned her Associate's Degree at Kilgore College. She earned her Bachelor's degree in athletic training at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and her Master's degree in athletic administration at Texas A&M University-Commerce.
